The HVOF (High Velocity Oxy-Fuel) process produces low porosity, dense thermal sprayed coatings that exhibit high bond strengths, some exceeding 12,000 PSI. It also produces low oxides and extremely fine as-sprayed finishes. Industrial HVOF coatings have low residual internal stress and can be sprayed to a thickness not normally associated with dense, thermal sprayed coatings.

HVOF, an oxygen-fuel mixture, is fed into a combustion chamber and ignited. The expanding gases flow through a nozzle from the combustion chamber. The powder is continuously fed into the combustion chamber and exits through the nozzle as a thermal spray coating onto the substrate at velocities up to 3200 feet per second.

HVOF coatings can survive harsh service conditions other industrial coatings cannot, particularly in wear and many corrosion applications, increasing component service life. The as-sprayed, smooth surface, low porosity, and uniform chemistry of HVOF coating can be finished to smooth surface profiles.

HVOF coatings are a common choice for dimensional restoration repair and corrosion control coatings. Many OEMs thermal spray their new components to extend the service life.

What is HVOF?

The High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) process is when fuel and oxygen are fed into a combustion chamber, ignited, and combusted continuously.

The hot gas expands rapidly and exits through a special converging-diverging nozzle. The HVOF Gas jet velocity at the exit of the barrel (greater than 2,000 meters per second) exceeds the speed of sound.

The Teknokraft tungsten carbide powder is injected into the HVOF gas stream then the powder is accelerated up to approximately 700 meters per second.

The jet of hot gas and powder (spray stream) is directed towards the surface to be coated. The powder partially melts in the stream and deposits upon the substrate. The resulting coating has, very low porosity, and high bond strength.

High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) spraying is a group of thermal spraying processes which spray flames at supersonic speeds. The detonation gun (D-gun) process was the first type of HVOF process used.

In HVOF processes, kinetic energy of particles is more important than temperature. These processes use high-impact energy to produce dense coatings at low temperatures.

In HVOF spraying, fuel and oxygen are pressed into a combustion chamber in a continuous flow, producing a jet of combustion products at extremely high speed. Powder particles injected into this gas steam are accelerated to an extremely high velocity. Fusion is obtained by the kinetic impact of the coating particles rather than by their increased temperature: the process is conducted in an ambient atmosphere.
